Unsolicited commercial e-mails (UCE), better known under the colloquialism spam, are a growing concern for computer users worldwide. The implications of this phenomenon are manyfold and have frequently been discussed in the press. One aspect, however, is generally overlooked: the impact of spam on the psychological security of the audience. The author argues that spam messages can be used for applying indirect suggestion techniques to individuals and groups. Moreover, he claims that spam is ideally suited for this purpose and explores the potential implications. |
