Work on this site is constantly in progress, and I am planning to customise the look and feel in due time. As you know, it is difficult to define a specific time frame for projects like this, so I make no promises.
I am a dedicated member of the Mathematical Society. In 2003-2004 I
served as its Vice-President and Treasurer. This year I am very busy
with my academic work, so I serve as Event Organiser.
Since the beginning of time (okay, maybe not
that long...), Mathematicians have been saddled with this clichéd reputation for
being a bunch of unsociable geeks. That's where MathSoc comes in. With our new
motto, "Prove the stereotype wrong!" we aim to show that there's more to a
Mathematician than just numbers.
YES, we do organize a few academic events.
Every so often, we invite lecturers in to give talks on subjects that we don't
normally have the opportunity to cover in lectures. BUT MathSoc's main aim is
to organize social events and encourage members of our
department (from undergrads to postgrads, and yes even lecturers) to mix &
mingle in a strictly non-academic
atmosphere.
We are showing the program "BBC Horizon - The Bible Code", with Dr. Lynda White and Dr. Dan Moore (both members of our Mathematics Department) as experts. Dr. White is a statistician specializing in the design of experiments and Dr. Moore is a numerical analyst and computer expert. In this programme they are trying to unravel the mystery of the Bible Codes.
Dr. John R. Silvester is an Admissions Tutor at King's College London. At 16:15 on Tuesday, 24 February 2004 in Clore Lecture Theatre, Huxley Building he presented the following talk: All Tilings Great and Small.
